Overview
The Maasai Mara National Reserve, one of the most iconic safari destinations in the world, is located in southwest Kenya and forms part of the larger Mara-Serengeti ecosystem. It is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, abundant wildlife, and cultural richness. A safari in the Maasai Mara promises an unparalleled experience, from witnessing the Great Migration to immersing yourself in Maasai traditions.
Key Highlights of the Maasai Mara
- The Great Migration:
- One of nature’s greatest spectacles, the annual migration of over 1.5 million wildebeest, 200,000 zebras, and gazelles from Tanzania’s Serengeti to Kenya’s Maasai Mara is a must-see. The animals make the perilous crossing of the Mara River, where they face crocodiles and predators waiting on the other side.
- Big Five Safari:
- The Maasai Mara is home to Africa’s Big Five – lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes, and rhinos. These magnificent creatures roam freely across the savannah, and visitors are almost guaranteed to see lions and elephants during game drives.
- Diverse Wildlife:
- Apart from the Big Five, the reserve teems with wildlife, including cheetahs, hyenas, giraffes, hippos, crocodiles, and a multitude of bird species. The Mara’s open grasslands make it easy to spot animals, even from a distance.
- Photographic Opportunities:
- The expansive savannah, with its endless horizons and golden sunsets, offers the perfect backdrop for wildlife photography. Whether capturing a lion on the hunt or the dramatic river crossings during the migration, the Mara is a paradise for photographers.
- Maasai Culture:
- The Maasai people, for whom the reserve is named, are one of the most famous indigenous groups in East Africa. A visit to a Maasai village offers a glimpse into their vibrant culture, from traditional dances to learning about their semi-nomadic lifestyle.
Services and Experiences in the Maasai Mara
- Game Drives:
- The Maasai Mara is best explored through guided game drives, typically offered at dawn and dusk when wildlife is most active. Expert guides lead these safaris, ensuring you spot the most sought-after animals and learn about the ecosystem.
- Hot Air Balloon Safaris:
- For a truly unique perspective of the Mara, take a hot air balloon ride at sunrise. As you float silently over the plains, you’ll witness the wildlife below from an entirely new angle. The experience ends with a champagne breakfast in the bush, making it one of the most unforgettable moments in the Mara.
- Walking Safaris:
- Walking safaris offer a more intimate experience of the bush. Led by knowledgeable guides and Maasai warriors, you’ll explore the smaller, fascinating aspects of the ecosystem, from tracking animal prints to observing plants and insects.
- Cultural Tours:
- Visit a local Maasai village to learn about the traditions, customs, and lifestyle of the Maasai people. Participate in their traditional dances, explore their manyatta (homesteads), and gain insights into how they coexist with the wildlife of the Mara.
- Luxury Tented Camps and Lodges:
- The Maasai Mara offers a range of accommodations, from luxury tented camps to lodges that blend seamlessly into the environment. Many camps are eco-friendly, providing comfort and exclusivity, with options for private game drives, bush dinners, and spa treatments.

This was not our first time going to here. It is a great place to shop not too far from New York. We took the bus from Port Authority and traveled through the countryside to get there.
